I live in Northern Virginia close to a variety of natural habitats to explore and photograph, including Civil War battlefields, national wildlife refuges, Shenandoah National Park, even my own backyard. Other photographic opportunities abound in nearby Washington DC and other local historic and scenic locales. The images on this site are a reflection of the wonders of nature that can be experienced if you stop and look around. I was introduced to photography by my father, a minister who also dabbled in photography. When I was a teenager in the 60s, Dad set up a darkroom in our house and taught me the basics. For five years during my high school and college years, I worked as an assistant to the owner of a studio in the small town of Logan in southeastern Ohio. After college I began a career in the Marine Corps, serving mostly as a financial management officer all over the world. I swapped my uniform for a civilian suit in 1994, but I still work for the Marine Corps in financial management. Photography during this time was a primary hobby, centered on pictures of family, of places I visited, and of NASCAR races and personalities. I began to get more serious about creating photographic images in 2005. My interest in the American Civil War focused my attention on the battlefields where North and South fought almost a century and a half ago. I created a website, Battlefield Images, which combined my passions for photography and Civil War history. I found that these battlefields, administered by the National Park Service and other organizations, protected not only the historic ground but also its plants, animals, and natural beauty. While hiking a battlefield, I experience a sense of awe and wonder associated with both the history and the nature of the place. In 2006 I took another step forward in my photographic pursuits by joining the Manassas-Warrenton Camera Club, an organization of amateur and professional photographers with a goal to satisfy your desire to improve your photography and to meet new people who also have an interest in photography. Participation in the monthly competitions and insights from speakers and fellow club members have led to continued improvement in my own photography. My interests and photographic locales have expanded beyond Civil War battlefields to other natural and scenic areas such as the Shenandoah National Park and the Occoquan and Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuges. Although I live in a suburban neighborhood, my backyard has also become a studio, frequented by several species of birds, an occasional deer or fox, and the everpresent squirrels. Dan Jenkins Photography launched in early 2007, with this website as a vehicle for showcasing my passion for nature photography. I hope you enjoy your stay. Visit the Print Store for information on purchasing fine art prints. Images are also available for editorial or commercial use. You may also visit Battlefield Images, where photographs of hallowed ground are displayed for your review and where the words of the soldiers who fought there can help make that view come alive. |
